Woven garment and knitwear exports from Bangladesh saw an increase during the first six months of the current financial year 2011-12, which began on July 1, 2011.
Exports of woven garments rose to US$ 4.45 billion during July-December 2011, showing a rise of 22.56 percent year-on-year, according to the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB). However, this was 0.30 percent short of the export target during the period.
Similarly, knitwear exports from the country grew to US$ 4.80 billion, registering an increase of 11.12 percent year-on-year during the six-month period. This was 5.12 percent less than the export target set for the period.
Despite the continuing economic problems in the EU, the rise in exports is attributed to the shifting of orders from China to Bangladesh.
Owing to the good growth in exports of apparels, the overall exports of Bangladesh jumped by 14.72 percent y-o-y to US$ 11.78 billion during the initial six months of current fiscal, 4.98 percent less than the target set for the period.
In December 2011, total exports from Bangladesh grew 29.76 percent on month-on-month basis to US$ 2.06 billion compared to exports of US$ 1.60 billion in November.
