The sales of apparels at various department stores across Japan declined by 2.6 percent year-on-year to 2,126,135 million yen during 2011, the Japan Department Stores Association revealed.
The data is a collection of sales figures across 254 outlets managed by 86 firms of its members.
The sales of womenswear and accessories witnessed a decline of 2.6 percent year-on-year to 1,383,691 million yen during the year.
The sales of menswear too fell by 1.8 percent y-o-y to 425,056 million yen, while that of kidswear dropped by 2 percent y-o-y to 159,227 million yen.
The overall sales at Japan's department stores fell to 6,152,565 million yen, registering a drop of 2 percent y-o-y, in 2011.
Region-wise, the decline in sales was noted across the country with the exception of Osaka, where sales increased by 0.6 percent y-o-y to 801,361 billion yen.
In Tokyo, sales fell by 3.3 percent to 1,494,432 million yen and in Tohoku region revenues dropped to 108,849 million yen, a decline of 1.6 percent.
