Japanese apparel imports (excluding accessories) rose in double digits in 2011, according to the Japan Textiles Importers Association.
As per provisional figures, garment imports reached ¥2,222.929 billion in 2011, up 11.7 percent from its previous year. Volume wise, clothing imports grew 5.1 percent to 3,937.27 million units.
China the biggest apparel exporter to Japan with a market share of over 80 percent witnessed its exports grow 8.1 percent in value and 1.6 percent in volume to ¥1,810.326 billion and 3,383.77 million units, respectively.
However, imports from other countries like Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Bangladesh and Myanmar too rose sharply in the year.
Knitwear imports increased by 3.1 percent in volume and 8.9 percent in value to 2,683.86 million units and ¥1,070.373 billion, respectively.
Imports of woven garment rose 9.7 percent and 14.5 percent to 1,254.41 million units valued at ¥1,152.556 billion, respectively.
