Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is likely to take up the issue of imposition of safeguard duty on Bangladeshi readymade garment (RMG) items with Turkish President Abdullah Gul during her visit to the Eurasian country next month.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to visit Turkey from April 9-14, 2012, according to an official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bangladesh.

Since September 2011, Turkey has subjected RMG imports from least developed countries, including Bangladesh, to a safeguard levy of 17 percent.

For quite some time, the Bangladesh Government has been urging the Government of Turkey to roll back the duty, but it has not received any positive response from Turkey so far.

During her visit, the Prime Minister is expected to sign agreements on direct air link as well as opening of direct banking network between the two countries. These agreements will boost bilateral trade and investment between Bangladesh and Turkey.
