Apparel exporters in Pakistan are anxiously awaiting the implementation of the EU package for duty-free export of 65 Pakistani textile and apparel products to the EU, according to the Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PRGMEA).
Earlier this year, the World Trade Organization's (WTO's) Council for Trade in Goods approved a package that allows a total of 75 Pakistani items duty-free export to the EU markets until the end of 2013.
However, the package can come into force only after completion of EU internal procedures, which includes approval from the EU Council and the EU Parliament.
The EU package is aimed at supporting the south Asian country cope with economic losses suffered due to heavy floods in 2010.
Shehzad Salim, Central Chairman, PRGMEA, said apparel exporters, who are members of the association, are eagerly awaiting the implementation of the EU tariff-free package.
PRGMEA members are trying to convince their EU customers to purchase from them as goods can be imported duty-free in their countries. But, when the customers contact EU Customs department they are given no such information and hence, the deal does not materialize, he said.
Mr. Salim said the tariff waiver would be implemented after it gets approval from the EU Council and the EU Parliament.
He added that the coming into force of the EU package may get delayed further if the EU Council does not take up the matter and give its approval in its meeting scheduled on April 12, 2012.
