Major garment export businesses in Vietnam note that even with a 20 percent rise in exports, they continue to face sustainable development challenges.

The challenges faced by Vietnamese apparel sector are in the form of inefficient production, volatile markets and inadequate financial resources, Deputy General Secretary of the Vietnam Textile and Garment Association, Nguyen Van Tuan said.

According to him, Vietnamese garment producers usually focus on retaining jobs in the sector, but are reluctant towards improving processes. On the other hand, Chinese and Japanese clothing producers have evolved more efficient production lines, he said.

He added that Vietnamese garment producers have even failed in developing effective support industries and domestic cotton and fibre suppliers. Hence, it is time for major garment businesses in Vietnam to act to retain their global competitiveness and to achieve sustainable growth.

A Ministry of Industry and Trade expert, Pham Van Chat said the enterprises should work for improving quality of their products, join international distribution networks and build recognized trademarks, to enhance their competitiveness and achieve sustainable development.

He said the Ministry has been strongly promoting Vietnam-made goods to key European supermarket chains.
