Vogue recently compiled a list of the best ballgowns, which features such lavish gowns as those designed by Alexander McQueen, Marchesa and Christian Dior, with raspberry-coloured ruffles and royal blues coveting the limbs of the rich and famous. Alongside this is the Victoria and Albert Museum’s current exhibition, Ballgowns: British Glamour Since 1950, that showcases and celebrates ‘ballgowns, red carpet evening dresses and catwalk showstoppers’. In total, there will be sixty designs for social events such as private parties, royal balls, state occasions and opening nights.
It all points to the Prom Dress making a huge fashion comeback. The styles are as varied as those wearing them. Either long and classic, like Marchesa or ballgown-big and brilliant like Dior’s creations.
New Look, at the foreground of high-street trend setting has profiled the prom dress as an exciting dress for making an impact. The collection is enormously varied; from the traditionally lavish Ruby Prom Madison Long Embellished Dress to the cute and classic Red Spotted Dress. There are also designs that capture the love of seasonal print. The Brown Animal Print Dress and Jungle Print Prom Dress both illustrate how diverse and daring the prom dress can be in design.
The prom dress has more often than not been teamed with the ‘up-do’, or a cascading mane of hair that accentuates the fairy tale nature of its effect. Simple earrings and gorgeous heels are finishing touches not to take lightly. New Look offer some elegant and delicately refined shoes for the prom dress. Trend it up with studded suede heels, or keep it strappy and satin for feminine simplicity.
Ladies can go the prom; the style that’s hit red carpets, dance floors and parties with princess perfection.
