A rise has been noted in Cambodia’s import as well as export of garment and textile items during the first half of the current year, a report released by the Commerce Ministry stated.

The Kingdom imported garments and textile raw inputs worth US$ 1.5 billion during the six-month period, showing a 23 percent rise over imports of US$ 1.22 billion made during the corresponding period of 2011.

Most of the Cambodian apparel and textile raw material imports were from China, Thailand, South Korea, Taiwan and Japan.

During the initial six months of the current year, Cambodia exported garments and textiles worth US$ 2.1 billion, registering a year-on-year rise of nine percent over exports worth US$ 1.93 billion made during the same period last year.

Cambodian garment and textile exports were mainly destined towards the US and the European nations. Canada, South Korea, China, Japan and some other Asian countries also sourced their apparel requirements from Cambodia during January-June 2012 period.

The garment sector is the biggest income generating industry in Cambodia, with presence of over 300 factories that employ 335,400 workers, of which, around 91 percent are females, according to the Ministry of Commerce.

In 2011, Cambodia exported garments worth US$ 4.24 billion, up 25 percent over its previous year’s exports.
