The cost of labour in China is much higher than that prevailing in neighbouring countries, China’s Vice Minister of Commerce Zhong Shan said.

The Minister said the average wage in Vietnam’s manufacturing sector is about 1,000 Yuan/month, while it is still lower at about 600 Yuan/month in India. In comparison, the average wage in China’s east coast is about 2,500 to 3,000 Yuan/month.

China’s apparel sector employs two kinds of workers – contract workers and formal workers. The basic monthly wage of a contract worker has risen from mere 700 Yuan/month in 2003 to 1,800 Yuan/month in 2012 in Suzhou province.

During the same period, the basic wage of a formal worker has doubled from 1,000 Yuan/month to 2,000 Yuan/month for apparel workers in Suzhou.

Over the last decade, the number of people working on contract basis has decreased significantly, while formal workers have risen.
