The Secretary of Labour has closed down an apparel unit in Piedras Moras, after the company failed to pay wages on time.

The decision to close the factory was taken after the owner of the garment unit did not attend the conciliatory meeting called by the Secretary of Labour.

Initially, the garment unit has been closed for a period of five days, and if the salaries are not paid during this period, the Secretary will be asked to extend the closure until the wages are paid, the National Labour Fedration of Apparel Industry (FONIVA) said.

Owing to non-payment of wages, FONIVA had filed a compliant with the Secretary of Labour, after which a meeting was arranged, but no discussion could take place in the absence of the owner of the apparel unit.

The company has already laid off over 40 employees and it currently employs only 12 workers.
