New Look unveils new 'Black & White' fashion trend

A new year invariably brings a host of new fashion trends, meaning every fashion journalist, blogger and aficionado is now scrapping to try and tell the world what their predictions are. The wonderful diversity and wealth of opinion in the fashion community makes for an interesting discussion but with so much information to sift through, it can often be difficult to pick out the fashion fact from fiction to truly tell which styles will win out in 2013.

Though contradiction is rife among the diverse opinions of the fashion community, there is no grey area over the fact that black and white stripes are in. Though solid black has been the uniform for any self-respecting fashionista for the last two decades, the new decision is how to best pull off black when faced with its counterpoint.

A perennial classic, monochrome remains so eminently wearable in that it is both striking yet conservative. Not to be lost amongst the lighter pastel tones of spring, and well at home in the seaside stripes of summer, it is also suitable year-round office attire for an elegant and professional look in the workplace. Designers have cottoned on to these qualities and enhanced them with an innovative chic take. Though recently flaunted at the runway shows of Ralph Lauren and Marc Jacobs, its straightforward elegance means it is not a style reserved for high fashion alone.

The ultimate in juxtaposition, wearing both the yin and the yang in harmony may seem a challenge, but New Look provide all the solutions with this bold and fresh approach in their monochrome range that includes dresses, tops, and women's jeans.

The trick is to keep it simple, so a striped top could be worn with black trousers and finished off with a pair of simple black wedges for a wonderfully uncomplicated look. However, simple needn't mean that black and white stripes are reserved for day wear; something like a black and white maxi dress is suitably striking to wear out in the evening.

Even though monochrome is likely present in many wardrobes already, the renaissance of 2013 comes with a new slick aesthetic - all parallel lines and angles - that can reinvigorate those classic staples like a black skirt or shoes, making the style easy to take up. Accessories need to follow the black and white trend too however, so make sure to add the finishing touch with the appropriate bag or purse.
