In his capacity as a deputy to the National People’s Congress (NPC), chairman of Bosideng Group Mr. Gao Dekang has submitted a proposal regarding development of Chinese apparel manufacturing industry at a NPC 2013 session.

The Chinese garment industry has to improve its efficiency, while increasing the salaries of its workers, Mr. Dekang said, according to a People’s Daily Online report.

Mr. Dekang explained that the skills and productivity of workers have not risen, along with their wages, and this has led to a heightened cost for the textile processing industry. As a result, the profit margins shrink and some companies may not be able to survive or buy latest machinery.

So, it is not surprising that several garment orders are flowing away from China to countries like Vietnam and Cambodia, which have comparatively lower labour costs, Mr. Dekang said.

Since the clothing industry causes little harm to environment, it becomes essential for the Chinese Government to frame and implement appropriate policies to subsidize and support the growth of the domestic garment industry, he added.
