Thailand’s capital city of Bangkok is aiming to become the apparel wholesale centre for the Asean region.

Thailand’s Department of Industrial Promotion will begin to work on improving the capacity of the existing four apparel wholesale markets in Bangkok, next year, according to National News Bureau of Thailand.

Small and medium business in the four markets – Chatuchak, Bobae, Pratunam and Sampheng – would be the focus of the department’s drive, Wirit Wisetsin, director of the New Entrepreneurs Creation division of the department said.

The Industrial Promotion department’s drive would include projects for development of sector specific industries ahead of the Asean economic integration in 2015, and a project for market negotiation and survey.

Thailand is already a major centre for clothing items and if the four markets are synergized, garment exports from the country would surge to at least 24 billion baht per annum, Phrakhorachai Siphawathikun, chairman of Bobae Market’s export service centre, said.

The Philippines is currently the top importer of garments from Thailand, followed by Malaysia.
