Unions irk over exclusion from Bureau of Spanish Fashion

May '13
The major unions of the Spanish textile sector have expressed disappointment for not being called at a recent meeting of the Bureau of Spanish Fashion, according to a statement jointly published by Federation of Industry and Agricultural Workers- General Union of Workers (FITAG-UGT) and Federation of Textile, Leather, Chemical and Allied: Workers’ Commission (FITEQA-CCOO).

The unions stated that they should have been involved in such an important forum which had representatives of the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism, Science and Innovation, and Education, Culture and Sports, along with manufacturers, designers and distributors from the Spanish fashion industry.

Members of the Bureau of Spanish Fashion should have taken into account the perspective of the representatives of workers as well, the statement said.

The Spanish workers’ unions believe they can bring a wealth of experience to the Bureau as they have participated in all the forums created to boost the Spanish fashion sector, including the Albaida Pact (2004).

As one of the main objectives of the meet was to “seek new possibilities for collaboration among stakeholders and to enable further growth” of Spain’s textile industry, the unions stated that they expected to be involved in the meet.

The statement concluded that without the workers’ perspective, the meeting between the members of the Spanish fashion industry and administration would be bereft of reality.
