Interest of all concerned in the readymade garment sector, including employers, buyers and workers, is important for smooth operation of the industry, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said.

Addressing a meting of the steering committee of the Garment Workers’ Coordination Council, the Prime Minister said the garment sector has been playing an important role in earning foreign exchange for the country, and it is important to maintain a congenial atmosphere in the industry.

She said although the interest of everyone, including employers, workers and buyers, is important, it is necessary to see the interest of those people whose labour and sweat results in production.

The interest of the employers also needs to be protected because if they shutdown their factories due to excessive pressure, workers would become jobless.

Ms. Hasina said her Government has set up backward linkage industry in the garment sector and increased the salary of the workers by over 80 percent through the wage board.

She added that the Government is building dormitories for garment workers, and would provide loan at low interest rate if employers come forward to construct such hostels for workers in the clothing sector.

She also stressed on the need for introduction of life insurance facilities for apparel workers.
