Thailand’s Ministry of Industry and the private sector discussed the possibility of developing the country into a fashion hub in Asia, Bernama reported quoting Thai News Agency.

At the second meeting of the Fashion Industry Development Project organizing committee held in Bangkok, speakers discussed ways to develop Thailand’s fashion industry on a sustainable basis, including display of Thai fashion products in world markets.

Speaking at the meeting, Suphap Kleekachai, advisor to the Minister of Industry, said the private sector better understands the global fashion trends and it has joined the organizing committee to help the Government in achieving the objective of developing Thailand into a fashion hub.

He said the Government would provide full support to the proposals made by the private sector, especially on issues such as raw materials and export management.

In December this year, a fashion fair would be organized to showcase Thai fashion products, he informed.

In 2012, Thailand’s textile exports dipped by 13.68 percent year-on-year to US$ 4.27 billion, while apparel exports fell by 9.95 percent year-on-year to US$ 2.95 billion.

The Philippines is currently the top importer of garments from Thailand, followed by Malaysia.
