Uruguay becomes 2nd largest importer of Paraguayan apparel

Uruguay has become the second largest buyer of Paraguayan clothing, next only to Brazil, according to the Tailoring Industry Association of Paraguay (AICP), La Nacion reported.

From January to October 2013, Paraguay exported apparel worth US$ 7.4 million. Until September this year, Argentina was the second top destination for Paraguayan clothing, and shipments have fallen due to trade barriers imposed by the neighbouring country.

Several clothing items like suits, trousers and jackets made in Paraguay are now destined to the Uruguayan market, which has now crossed a turnover of US$ 1.608 million so far this year, the report said.

At present, Brazil is the top importer of apparel from Paraguay. As per AICP data, Brazil imported over US$ 4.532 million worth of garments from Paraguay until October this year, which is a substantial increase over last year’s figure of US$ 3.805 million recorded during the same period last year.

Of this, T-shirts made from various fabrics accounted for US$ 836,054, while other garments like innerwear and nightwear for girls and women, made of synthetic and artificial fibres, accounted for US$ 713,971.

Paraguayan garment exports to Argentina fell by 9 percent year-on-year until October this year to US$ 721,665, relegating it to the third position, after Brazil and Uruguay.

Until September, the second position belonged to Argentina even though shipments to that country fell from earlier this year by trade barriers.
