Japan's clothing imports down in May'14

The imports of clothing and accessories by Japan declined by 10.2 percent year-on-year to 206.639 billion yen (approx US$ 2.03 billion) in May 2014, as per the provisional trade statistics released by the Ministry of Finance. The value of import is based upon the CIF value, and the entry is made in the month within which falls the date of the import permit, the press release said.
 
Japan’s garment and accessories imports from Asian countries decreased by 12.2 percent year-on-year to 190.694 billion during the month under review. Of this, imports from China dropped by 16.7 percent to 143.903 yen, the data showed.
 
During the month, Japan imported apparel and accessories worth 10.359 billion from the EU, showing an increase of 25.3 percent year-on-year. The Far Eastern country also imported 1.194 billion yen worth of clothing and accessories, down 13.2 percent, from the US.
 
In May 2014, Japan also imported textile yarn and fabrics valued at 74.699 billion yen, registering a marginal increase of 2.1 percent year-on-year.
 
In fiscal year 2013-14 that ended on March 31, 2014, Japan’s clothing and accessories imports surged by 20.5 percent year-on-year to 3.317 trillion yen, while its textile yarn and fabric imports shot up by 22.3 percent year-on-year to 888.909 billion yen.
