Kurunjipadi lungis find their way in to Europe

Kurunjipadi lungis are preparing its way to enter the European market after a UK based buyer placed an order for 1,000 pieces.

Until now, these comfortable Indian wraparounds were exported only to Singapore, Sri Lanka and Malaysia. Kurunjipadi is one of the first three clusters in the State of Tamil Nadu to be recognized by the Centre for revival of handloom weaving under the Integrated Handloom Development Cluster Program. Co-optex, acted as the implementing agency for this initiative which was aimed at ensuring continuous employment and regular and decent payment to the weavers.

The UK based buyer visited the cluster and has recommended certain changes in the color, length, pattern and design. On the basis of these suggestions, weavers started making 10 different varieties of lungis to suit customer preferences. The client has also promised to order an additional of 10,000 lungis in the future.

In an exclusive interview with Fibre2fashion, MP Nirmala, Special Officer and Managing Director of Co-optex, asserted, “Lungis produced in Kurunjipadi area is far better in quality and design than those produced in other areas. Available in white color checks with Kambam designs, these garments have a very good demand in UAE. Moreover, the Payadi Lungis which are produced in 5-6 color combinations are also exported to Indonesia and African countries.”

When asked about the other clusters in the state, Ms Nirmala mentioned about Thiruvannamalai which is a mega cluster and various others like Appakudal, Thandampalayam, Sirumugai, Jayankondam, Kantachipuram, Nilaiyur, Palani, Veeravanallur, Sholingar, and Padirivedu which are mini clusters under the implementing agency of Co-optex.

Ms Nirmala also talked about other products like bed linen, table linen, kitchen linen, bath linen and voil curtain which are exported by the Kurunjipadi cluster.
