Market for textiles & clothing grows by 8.18% in 2007 - Survey

•Market for Salwar - Kameez:
The total market size of salwar-kameez has stood at 339 million pieces in 2007 as compared to 319 million pieces in 2006. The demand for salwar-kameez has thus gone up by 6.27 percent in 2007 over the demand in 2006. Out of the above, the urban areas have a share of 42.77 percent and rural areas a share of 57.23 percent.

The man-made and blended/mixed salwar kameez is the popular category with a demand share of 74.63 percent of the market as against 25.37 percent of cotton salwar kameez. The demand for cotton salwar kameez during the period is estimated at 86 million pieces and for man-made and blended/mixed salwar kameez it is estimated at 253 million pieces.

•Market for Dhoti:
The total market size of dhoti (M) has stood at 117 million pieces in 2007 as compared to 128 million pieces in 2006. The demand for dhoti has thus declined by 8.59 percent in 2007 over the demand in 2006.

Out of the above, the urban areas have a share of 21.37 percent and rural areas a share of 78.63 percent. The dhoti market is showing a gradually decreasing size due to the shifts in the dressing pattern of the people, especially in southern and eastern regions of the country.

The cotton dhoti is the preferred one with a demand share of 72.65 percent over 27.35 percent of man-made and blended/mixed dhoti. The demand for cotton dhoti during the period is estimated at 85 million pieces and for man-made and blended/mixed dhoti it is estimated at 32 million pieces.

•Market for Saree:
The total market size of sarees is estimated at 1720 million pieces in 2007 as compared to 1612 million pieces in 2006. The demand for sarees has thus gone up by 6.70 percent. Out of the above, the urban areas have a share of 38.49 percent and rural areas a share of 61.51 percent.

The saree market is showing a gradually increasing size though there are shifts in the dressing pattern of the women, especially in southern and eastern regions. The man-made and blended/ mixed saree has higher demand with a share of 75.47 percent of the market as against 22.90 percent of cotton sarees and the rest 1.63 percent of the share is with the pure silk sarees.

The demand for cotton saree during the period is estimated at 394 million pieces and for man-made and blended/mixed saree it is estimated at 1298 million pieces. The demand for pure silk saree during the period is estimated at 28 million pieces.

•Market for T-shirt(Male):
The total market size of readymade T-shirt (M) has stood at 179 million pieces in 2007 as compared to 165 million pieces in 2006 showing an increased demand for T-shirt (M) by 8.48 percent.

•Market for T-shirt(Female):
The total market size of readymade T-shirt (F) has stood at 13 million pieces in 2007 as compared to 11 million pieces in 2006 showing a growth of 18.18 percent.
