According to a statistical report prepared by the General Secretariat of Istanbul Textile and Apparel Exporters' Associations (ITKIB), exports of apparel in 2008 touched US $15.7 billion. Of this, $12.5 billion was generated from exports made to the 27 member strong European Union.
This translates in to a 79.5 percent market share that the European Union commands for exports of clothing from Turkey and in the process making it the biggest trading partner for shipments from the sector.
This market share has been maintained despite, most of the countries of the EU being in the throes of a deep recessionary phase in the last quarter of 2008, and the apparel export industry has done well to maintain the same market share it garnered in 2007.
