The city of Qingdao, set up a joint committee from the government as well as trade in October, last year to help the cause of foreign trade. In all, nineteen measures, which should be adopted by the exporters, were adopted by the committee, which have now played an important role under the present distressing circumstances.
According to recently released customs statistics, exports from Qingdao have touched US $2.25 billion in January, a growth of 2.7 percent. This growth, though nominal, has come at a time when other enterprises in the country are struggling to just stay alive and maintain export levels achieved last year, rather than achieving growth in 2009.
This growth rate of 2.7 percent is 20.3 percent over and above the national average. The newly set up enterprises of 2008, the numbers which have increased by 1,527 over 2007, have helped to a great extent, by accounting for 12.8 percent of the total exports from the city in January, in reaching $229 million.
In the clothing category, exports touched $352 million, up 32.4 percent y-o-y, textile exports fetched $154 million, up 12.8 percent and footwear shipments marked $105 million, up by a flattering 40 5 percent, along with two other categories which were able to garner growth in double digits y-o-y.
From amongst exports to different countries, shipments to the United States, Japan and Africa achieved a year-on-year increase of 22.0 percent, 13.2 percent and 9.5 percent, respectively. In comparison, export figures from other provinces in China showed a double digit decline in most of the sectors.
