BGMEA flays indiscriminate power cuts in Chittagong

A severe electricity crisis has engulfed parts of Bangladesh, more so in the province of Chittagong and which is disrupting the production and in turn the dispatch schedules of garment manufacturing companies.

Towards that end, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers & Exporters Association (BGMEA) has submitted a memorandum to the provincial Power Development Board and have demanded stop to the indiscriminate load shedding.

BGMEA has alleged that power interruptions are occurring at any and many times during the day, which puts even generators at a disservice. They have demanded that load shedding be done in a phased manner, so that they may plan out for the same.

Among other demand, they have insisted on interest free loans to buy generators, lowering the cost of diesel used in generators and expediting repair work of power failure occurring in any of the garment export companies.

The top brass of the Chittagong regional office of the Power Development Board have assured the BGMEA of uninterrupted supply, April onwards, once the needs of the agriculture sector are met in the next thirty days.
