Spiders have been existing in this planet for more than 400 million years; long enough to perfect their silk making mechanisms. Silk from spiders is an amazing material which can withstand the stress of adverse conditions. These delicate strands possess unbelievable elasticity that can stretch upto twenty times of its normal length and have the resistance of steel. So, it's not just the Spiderman, who can hang on to the strands and do all the magic!
Spider silk is obtained from the protein fibres spun by spiders. It is the most sought after material, and due to its unavailability is even nicknamed as the 'Holy Grail'. Historically used by ancient Greeks, they are now utilized in making fishing lines and nets. They are also used to stop bleeding wounds, and in the making of waterproof clothing.
Spider silk sees profitable applications in making rip-proof war field clothing, bandages, surgical threads, artificial tendons and ligaments etc. But, as it is difficult to maintain spiders, mass production is impossible. Manufacturing it artificially is a complex process as well. Thus, these silk strands still remain a challenge to scientists.
