Indian apparel and clothing exporters are going through the worst phase of the industry's history. Now, to reverse the trend the garment exporters in the country are planning to concentrate on other new products to regain the lost business.
Among the products which the Apparel Exporters Promotion Council (AEPC), the apex body for apparel exporters in India has proposed diversifying and making inroads in to shipments of products like loungewear, nightwear and beachwear.
The other segment which AEPC has shortlisted as a potentially good sub-sector is products made from technical textiles products, like Marquee tents and cricket pitch mats. According to AEPC all these products have huge scope.
At the same time, AEPC has also identified a few other countries in order to diversify exports and reduce the impact of slowdown. They are South Africa, Japan, Mexico and Russia, among the eight countries identified for concentration in 2009.
Clothing exports in fiscal 2008-09 which touched US $10.13 billion were able to cross figures of the previous fiscal by registering a growth of 4.6 percent, though fell short of $11.6 billion, the targeted figures for the same fiscal.
