'Implement new trade union rules' – GMAC, urges government

The Garment Manufacturers Association of Cambodia (GMAC) has insisted that the government should urgently consider implementing a law, to regulate the number of trade unions that can function in any particular apparel manufacturing unit.

They point to the fact that there are over 1,500 trade unions for just 300 manufacturing companies which is leading to many problems and has now become a question of survival, and want to limit them to just one trade union for each factory.

This they say will reduce the number of strikes which has caused a lot of production losses and has also meant creating an atmosphere of uncertainty in the minds of the global buying community and could also lead to a loss of confidence.

They have urged the government to take this brave step as it will bring peace to a sector which has seen the number of strikes increasing with each passing year and has also meant loss of production in the export garment units.
