Clothing exporters realize better unit prices by value-addition

The Export and Import Inspection and Quarantine Department in Xiaoshan District recently reported that the Department inspected 10,030 lots of apparel exports in total from January to May, worth of US $29,111.7, down 16.4 percent and 6.6 percent, respectively from the same period in 2008.

This is clearly the first downward trend in textile and garment exports in Xiaoshan District since 2006. According to statistical data from the Department, although export volume of clothing from Xiaoshan District fell, the average unit price of clothing rose nearly 3 percent from the same period last year.

At the same time, many foreign clothing enterprises have shifted large number of orders for mass produced clothing to lower cost inland areas in China due to rising labour costs in Xiaoshan district.

The main reason for the rise in per unit export prices is that, garment enterprises in Xiaoshan have changed their operation tactics, and now they are focusing on improving product quality, increasing exports of high value-added products which have together led to better price realizations for the exporters.
