Shorter lead times vital to stay competitive

Lead time is the major consideration of buyers when buying clothes. International buyers will place an order when price is low and the lead time is short.

Garments manufactured in Bangladesh fall in the low to medium category. The major key areas for Bangladesh are price competitiveness, short lead-time.

Lead time is becoming a serious bottleneck for Bangladesh. The country has a lead time of 90-135 days for woven garment industry.

Comparatively, countries like Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, and Vietnam have a lesser lead time of 60-90 days.

Major international buyers of Bangladeshi clothing include Wal-Mart, JC Penney, Tesco, Zara, TU clothing in Sainsbury's, George, Adams, Marks & Spencer, Primark, Carrefour, H & S, etc.

These retail giants look for quickness in delivery when the product can be put in the store rack, while it is in demand among the consumers.

To sustain in the competitive free trade apparel market and at same time face the financial 'Tsunami' in the world market; price and speed delivery could be vital issue for ready-made garment industry of Bangladesh.
