According to customs statistics, in the first five months of 2009, China's clothing exports to the United States and Japan slightly increased while shipments to the EU fell and its market share to these three regions, did not witness any major changes.

Exports to the EU accounted for 24.9 percent of China's total exports and the negative growth rate was lower than overall drop in growth rates in exports from clothing sector, while exports to Japan and US accounted for 17.2 and 18.7 percent, respectively.

China's exports of textiles and garments to Japan actually increased by 4.36 percent, to touch US $5.33 billion. In addition, the data reveals exports to Hong Kong, South Korea, and the CIS countries fell, with that to the CIS dipping by a massive 39.8 percent.

Clothing exports to Hong Kong decreased by 7.4 percent, which indicates the fact that Hong Kong's role as a re-exporter has weakened to a considerable extent after the dismantling of the remaining quotas by the US and EU in December 2008.

China's total of textile and apparel exports in the first five months fell by 1.04 percent y-o-y to touch $55.85 billion. Of which, textile exports amounted to $36.82 billion, down 5.5 percent and apparel exports realized $22.02 billion, down by 8.1 percent.
