Union official raises 'Buy Australian' war cry

A manufacturer of school uniforms; Poppets Schoolwear is shutting down a few of its machines and in process will lay off 47 jobs, since one of its Australian buyers has started sourcing goods from China.

Earlier this week, the King Gee factory located in Bellambi closed down as its main buyer Pacific Brands decided to offshore the contracts to overseas companies, a trend which has picked up pace in the last few years.

Reacting to these closures, an official of the “Textile, Clothing and Footwear Union” has called upon consumers to demand of the Australian manufacturers to produce their goods in Australia, rather than source them from an overseas country.

He said, people do not seem to understand that buying cheap Chinese goods means loss of Australian jobs and by buying goods made in the country, these consumers can help save local jobs.
