According to the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (VITAS), garment exports have fetched US $5.1 billion in the first six months of 2009, which is down by just 1 percent, when compared with that achieved in same period of 2008.

This has raised hopes amongst the garment exporter's community of striving to achieve US $10.5 billion in exports from the sector. Experts opine that positive signs of improvement in order position are very apparent.

Mr Le Quac An, Chairman of the Vietnam Garments and Textiles Group (Vinatex) says that there are positive signs of recovery in the economy and in the first two weeks of August alone, shipments from the sector touched $360 million.

But, he said the industry would have to export at least $800 million worth of goods to reach last year's export value of $9.5 billion, but added by saying that if everyone strived hard, shipments could reach $10.5 billion.
