According to an up-date from the Surat Apparel Park Association (SAPA), which is a trade body of the apparel manufacturing export units in the Surat Apparel Park SEZ, Gujarat, three of the 11 units have shut down their plants.

Due to the global economic slowdown, the 11 apparel exporters have shipped negligible value of goods in the last few months. These units had requested the state and central government to de-notify the SEZ status and convert it in to regular apparel park.

The Managing Director of Gujarat Industries Development Corporation (GIDC), Mr Arvind Agarwal, which is managing the Park, met the unit owners and had a two hour discussion.

Mr Agarwal was convinced about the problems faced by the apparel exporters and also about the need to de-notify the Park status and promised to put up the issue with the state government and the concerned ministry.

The association members will also be meeting the Industries Minister in the Gujarat Government, Mr Saurabh Patel as well as the Principal Secretary in the Commerce Ministry in the Central Government and request to take swift action on their proposal.

The association members have warned that incase urgent action to de-notify the SEZ status is not taken, the remaining eight units will also close down, leading to thousands of job losses in the apparel park.
