ICAHT-09 draws full house. Evokes 'value thinking' mantra

The 5th international conference on Apparel and Home Textiles ICAHT-09 themed - 'Value Thinking' held under the aegis of Okhla Garment and Textiles Cluster (OGTC) concluded successfully on Saturday, at the India Habitat Centre with the intent of managing better - people, processes and technology to aid the progress of Indian garment and textile industries.

Rounding off the sessions briefly, Mr Tony Uppal, President expressed his satisfaction over the successful conduct of the two-day deliberations where industry experts, technical services providers and leading cluster entities deliberated over proactive technical sessions.

Some of the industry experts who presented their topics during the sessions were Dr Rajesh Bheda of Rajesh Bheda Consulting, Mr Richard Clayton-Alsop from GSD Corporate, Malaysia, Mr Peter Pinder-Browne of Pinder-Browne Consulting and Mr Roger Thomas from Methods Workshop, South Africa.

There was a judicious mix of industry and academia from the audience and the interactive sessions drew very positive and though provoking responses from among the panelists.

On the evening of September 18, Mr Saktivel, Chairman, Poppys Knitwear, Tirupur was honoured with a glittering trophy and citation titled 'OGTC Path Breaker Award 2009.' Dr J N Singh, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India did the honours.

The prestigious Padma Shri Award was recently bestowed upon Mr Saktivel by the President of India, Mrs Pratibha Devisingh Patil, recently. This is a unique honour for a personality from the textile industry and he deserved every bit for his selfless and benevolent services not only for the progress of the industry but also to the society in general.

Among those present on the dais during the function were Mr Rakesh Vaid, Chairman, Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC), Mr Premal Udani, President, Clothing Manufacturers Association of India (CMAI), Mr R C Kesar, Director and Mr Mehra, Joint Director - OGTC.

In the backdrop of this conference, a poster competition was held where interesting posters on Carbon Footprint, Ayurvastra, Ultrasound techniques for cleaning soiled clothing, eco friendly processes etc, were displayed. The participants were mostly students from Lady Irving College, NIFT and other institutions.

AEPC was the lead sponsor of the event with German Technical Cooperation SME Financing & Development Project – GTZ as the knowledge partner.
