Authorities in Shanwei, Guangdong province of China have begun to clampdown on what has become a hub for trading in nearly 100 million pieces of illegally imported foreign garments, passing through the region, each year.
According to the Mayor of Shanwei, nearly, 120 tons of smuggled garments have been confiscated in Jieshi Township, Lufeng County, since July. But sources close to the business say that, this amount is only the tip of an iceberg.
These used garments are brought in over from Hong Kong, which are then distributed to the numerous garment wholesalers doting the region. These then are re-distributed to the thousands of factories who re-furbish the clothing.
The biggest matter of concern for the authorities is that, these garments are not disinfected before being brought into the country and have the capacity to affect the workers as well as the consumers who buy them after they are re-furbished.
