Textile and clothing trade associations numbering to around 45 from nearly 29 countries are opposing the move to provide duty-free access to the US markets. A Cambodian delegation is currently in the US to lobby for the same.
These trade organisations from North and South America, Asia and Africa have sent a letter to the 'House of Representatives Ways & Means Committee' urging them not to consider the proposal of Cambodia to extend duty-free status to Cambodia as well as Bangladesh.
A delegation led by Commerce Minister Cham Prasidh and representatives from the Garment Manufacturers' Association of Cambodia (GMAC) have planned to ask the US to drop duties at a conference marking the tenth anniversary of the signing of the Bilateral Textile Agreement between the two countries.
Clothing exports to the US markets accounts for nearly 62 percent of all apparel exports from Cambodia which dropped by 28.77 percent to US $1.12 billion in the first nine months of the year while its overall garment exports fell 21.66 percent to $1.78 billion in the same period.
