AAFA applauds Senate passage of trade preference program renewals
Kevin M. Burke, AAFA President and CEO
The American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) praised the U.S. Senate for renewing two soon-to-expire trade preference programs. Last night's vote clears the way for the United States to renew the Andean Trade Preference Act and the Generalized System of Preferences for one year. AAFA now urges President Obama to immediately sign these extensions to prevent any further business disruptions faced by the U.S. apparel and footwear industry.
“I applaud the U.S. Senate for taking action to keep these important programs from lapsing,” said AAFA President and CEO Kevin M. Burke. “I now call on President Obama to sign these extensions as soon as possible so our industry can continue doing business.”
“If these extensions are not in place by the end of the year, the U.S. apparel and footwear industry will experience a fourth year of negative growth,” said Burke. “Our industry's ability to recover is contingent upon the consumer's purchasing power. Right now, affordability is the name of the game and these programs fit that model.”
