Appearances on popular television shows like "Gossip Girl" and in the windows of trendy apparel retailers are helping to propel school uniforms to the top of the fashion charts, according to French Toast, a leading supplier of school uniforms for boys and girls.

In addition to the exposure on "Gossip Girl" and in store windows, plaids and other staples of the "private school look" are being featured in newspapers and magazines and on some younger celebrities, said Michael Arking, president of French Toast.

"Pop culture seems to have embraced the school uniform as fashionable," Arking noted, adding that "it certainly doesn't hurt that school uniforms are also incredibly affordable."

Another interesting aspect of this trend, said Arking, is that kids are using accessories to dress up their school uniforms. Arking pointed out that students are using scarves, ties, jewelry and other accessories to "personalize" their school uniforms to create their own unique statement. And in today's economy, parents and kids alike are becoming very creative and uniforms are being worn on weekends and in other venues besides the schoolroom.

Since 1958, French Toast has provided families with quality children's wear and school uniforms at great prices. Schools and school districts across the country also turn to French Toast for information and tools that can help them adopt their own school uniform and dress code policies.
