GEN-PROM aims to enhance skills of garment workers

Guideline Services:
As part of the package, the consultants provide guideline services to participating companies in any one of the following areas:

• Industrial engineering;
• Cutting room management;
• Sewing room management;
• Quality control/assurance; and
• Business process mapping.

The consultants conduct a gap analysis in the selected area and present their findings and areas for improvement in light of the best practices in the field. This is followed by a series of weekly meetings between the company management and consultants to make and monitor improvements. The responsibility of implementation of guidelines rests with the company and the consultants are available for guidance and troubleshooting.

Merchandisers' Training:
Under this training, the existing merchandisers of the participating companies can take a special training course designed to polish the professional skills of merchandisers and amplify their understanding of concepts regarding the garment manufacturing process.

In addition to this, if a company wishes to add new merchandisers to its team, fresh incumbents (preferably women) can be added to the MT training program. The workload of this training course will be about six hours per week which is manageable for merchandisers already working in organizations.

Stitching Machine Operator Training Program (SMOT II):
Under this initiative, the Ministry of Textiles supports companies in training their machine operators by providing 50% of the Master Trainers' salaries and a part of the stipend given to trainee operators. GEN-PROM is recognized by the ministry for its content and quality of delivery, and all companies signed up with GEN-PROM can avail this opportunity.

Responsibilities of the Participating Companies:
Companies who wish to participate in the GEN-PROM initiative will need the following:

• Each company will need to recruit Master Trainers, who will first pass a test for qualification, and provide their salaries;
• After the first four weeks each company will have to establish a training unit in its factory which will be equipped with:
• Machinery according to the training needs of cutting, stitching, finishing, packing, quality assurance and quality control;
• Accessories including but not limited to tables, lights and dustbins;
• Thirty to fifty adult Matriculate workers, preferably women, who pass the entry test;
• Material including fabric, thread, clippers, paper etc;
• One mechanic, one cutter, two helpers and other coordinating staff equipped with the required tools.
• Each company will also need to facilitate GEN-PROM and the consultants with - office with utilities; transport for pick and drop; food and coordination.
• Each company will contribute the sum of Rs 300,000 for training.
