Tunisian clothing exports on an upswing

As signs of recovery seem to be apparent in countries of the European Union, exports of Tunisian textiles and clothing to its largest buyer seem to be on an upsurge.

In the first two months of 2010, the Tunisian textile and apparel industry has witnessed an increase of 16.9 percent and 12.7 percent in value and volume, respectively.

Shipments of T-shirts alone were able to garner a growth of 10.29 percent in value and 2.55 percent in volume mainly in its exports to the Italian market.

The textile industry is the largest manufacturing sector in Tunisia, representing 36 percent of manufacturing exports and generates export revenue of €3 billion.

Among other achievements, the Tunisian clothing sector is the fifth biggest supplier to the EU and also the biggest exporter from amongst countries on the southern Mediterranean shore.

The Tunisian garment industry is also the third biggest supplier of jeans, the fourth largest supplier of trousers and the fifth largest supplier of clothing to EU.

There are around 1,000 foreign companies currently operating in the textile and clothing sector in Tunisia, who have made huge investments in the sector.
