Apparel export sector can expect more sops

The Central Government is expected to announce more sops for the still struggling apparels, leather and engineering sectors in the next week.

The Commerce Ministry had conducted a review of these sectors and came to the conclusion that these sectors still need to be helped out, despite overall export monthly figures turning positive since the last 3-4 months.

In the recently declared union budget, the government had extended the 2 percent interest subvention scheme for the next fiscal; however sectors like garments and leather had been removed from the list.

Overall exports from India during April-January 2009-10 had declined by17.8 percent, when compared with the same period, a year ago. Clothing exports fell by 13 percent in January 2010 from that in January 2009.
