A parliamentary body has suggested implementing a new wage board for the workers of the clothing sector, considering that prices of essential items have gone up in the last few years. The minimum wage for these workers was last implemented in 2006.
“The body also took in to consideration that a national pay scale has also been announced for the government officials, while putting across the proposal to implement a new wage board,” said Mr Alam, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Labour Ministry.
The committee also recommended increasing the strength of the inspection and compliance officials as the current strength of 24 officials was not enough to oversee around 7,000 factories spread out across Dhaka and Chittagong regions.
They also advocated overhauling and updating the existing labour laws enacted in 1980, to further and protect the interest of the workers.
