The American Apparel & Footwear Association(AAFA) released the following statement regarding yesterday's publication of the 2010 National Trade Estimate Report. The NTE Report is an annual review coordinated by the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) of foreign trade barriers faced by U.S. exporters.

“In order to meet President Obama's goal of doubling U.S. exports in the next five years, overcoming and reducing barriers to trade is critical,” said AAFA President and CEO Kevin M. Burke.

“Opening markets at home and around the world will ensure we can meet that goal. I am pleased the Obama Administration remains ambitious about the role that exports will play in our recovery. At the same time, we must remain cognizant that imports are also important to the overall strength of our economy.”

“The NTE Report highlights many of the challenges and opportunities we have ahead of us,” Burke said. “Because the U.S. apparel and footwear industry makes everywhere and sells everywhere, knocking down foreign trade barriers all around the globe will help create and sustain hundreds of thousands of jobs here at home. We will continue working with the administration and Congress to achieve a balanced trade policy that promotes U.S.-made and U.S.-branded products, protects intellectual property, and encourages America's entrepreneurial spirit.”
