Labour shortage forces firms to give up orders

Jining City, Shangdong has more than 400 textile and garment enterprises. At the end of February this year, these enterprises ran short of 12,000 workers, forcing these companies to give up 266 export orders, worth about 190 million Yuan.

According to Secretary General of Textiles and Apparel Association of Jining, Wang De, “The textile and garment industry is a low-profit sector with poor working conditions and long hours of work and low wages, which dissuades workers from joining the sector”.

As many textile and garment enterprises in Jining receive gradually increasing orders this year, these factories are almost working at full production capacities, so overtime work is a common practice due to huge gap in employment.

At present, textile workers basically work 10 hours or more per day, with only a few days for rest in a month and are able to earn between 1000-1500 Yuan per month. The proportion between their income and work is directly out of proportion.
