An outfit which includes a blue cardigan and shorts, created for astronaut Naoko Yamazaki, is the latest creation by Japanese fashion designer, Tae Ashida.
Yamazaki and two other female crew members, who have embarked on a journey to the International Space Station (ISS) on US space shuttle, 'Discovery', on April 5. This is said to be a historic mission that will place more women in orbit than ever before.
Yamazaki, 39, had asked Ashida, daughter of fashion guru, Jun Ashida, to re-design her official suit for the thirteen day space mission. Ashida in turn designed a slim knit cardigan in light blue with navy blue shorts.
According to Ashida, the design and colours were chosen to add grace to the astronaut. She said, “I wanted Yamazaki to feel at ease while carrying out a tough mission in a male-dominated, austere atmosphere.”
“I am looking forward to seeing Yamazaki in my design. It is like a dream come true to see my clothes worn in space”, said Ashida.
A series of zero-gravity challenges such as testing a 'flying carpet', folding laundry and using eye drops in ISS were carried out by Koichi Wakata, videos of which were uploaded online by the Japanese space agency.
