As a result of increase in apparel orders from Japan, Bangladeshi apparels witnessed export growth of 140 percent to Japan last year. In the year 2009, apparel exports from Bangladesh to Japan were valued at US $125 million, while in 2008; the country shipped just $52 million worth of garments.
Experts are of the opinion that the industry exporters should seize this opportunity of turn in winds in favour of Bangladesh. The Chinese textile and garment sector has a near iron-grip hold over global exports from the sector and has an enviable market-share of 80 percent of all textile and clothing exports to Japan.
As per the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), the importers in Japan are now seeking more sources to reduce their dependence on China for apparel products and since Bangladesh offers a low-cost base, it is turning out to be a good sourcing base for Japanese textile and garment importers.
One more reason forwarded by JETRO is that, since the country has experience of a number of years, in exporting garments to the developed and quality conscious markets such as US and EU, it is now skilled enough to cater to the high-quality requirements of the Japanese customer.
