The Gujarat branch of National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), a premier institute, which conducts courses in fashion designing, is creating functional and comfortable uniforms for the field staff manning the Gir Lion sanctuary in Gujarat, who walk a lot in hot and humid weathers.

The new uniforms which will have camouflage patterns with anti-bacterial finishing will be made available to the over 400 field staff of the sanctuary. The Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife Crime Cell), Gujarat Medicinal Plant Board and NIFT are coordinating the project.

Mr Vishal Gupta, Associate Professor of NIFT, Gandhinagar, who spoke to fibre2fashion said, “NIFT has done various projects on uniforms. Government has approached NIFT to design uniform for forest field staff and since their current uniforms are colonial style, we are reviving style, colour and giving the modern finishing of fabrics.”

He added by saying, “We have done survey on three groups that are forest officers, range officers and forest guards found that they have to track in forests as well as do night duty, so we would like to make uniforms more comfortable for them and the fabric used in their uniforms will have an anti-bacterial finish and crotch guard.”
