Immediate reformation of the 'minimum wage board' has been demanded by trade union leaders of the garment sector, as workers' representative has not been appointed in the board for minimum wage recommendation for garment workers.
General Secretary of Mohila Sramik League, Shamsunnahar Bhuiyan, has been appointed as a member of the wage board, which is a violation of country's labour laws as she is not a leader of the garment sector's trade unions, complained Baharane Sultan Bahar, a trade union leader.
He has urged the government to eliminate Shamsunnahar from the board and threatened the government of staging a strike in case she is retained in the board and not removed within the next seven days.
Bahar, who represents 21 trade unions in garment sector, said that, in order to remove her from the board he will present a memorandum to the Labour and Employment Ministry and other offices. Such kind of appointment in the 'minimum wage board' is against Bangladesh's labour law, he added.
As per law, the government has to appoint workers' representative in the wage board from amongst the workers.
