As per an owner of an apparel factory in Bangladesh, the minimum per month wage for garment factory labourers is likely to be fixed at Tk 2,500 from the current Tk 1,662.50.
Also, while an entry-level worker will receive Tk 2,500 in the first year as minimum wage, the same will be raised by 10 percent per year, for the next two years. At the end of the third year, the wage board will settle down against to fix a new pay package, added this owner. The workers will also be given their yearly increment.
Workers are likely to agree now with the proposed rise in their minimum monthly wage, as the same has been approved by representatives of workers, factory owners and government, during the last wage board meet.
Such a pay rise, which will take place in phases is helpful for both workers and owners, as most of the factories, especially the small and medium industries, do not have the capacity to bear a sudden huge rise in minimum wage, informed this owner.
More so, workers are at an advantage with this new decision, as the wage board has decided to review the pay structure every three years, instead of the current five years.
However, the Labour and Employment Minister, Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain has refused to comment.
