Czech exports to Iraq witness record hike

Czech exports to Iraq increased more than two times to record Kc1.814 billion in Jan-July, 2010. The increase was from Kc 808 million, during the same period last year.

Garments like shirts, blouses, T-shirts and innerwear mostly contributed to the country's exports to Iraq.

The data, however, does not indicate that the country's exports to Iraq are soaring. The rise in exports is probably due to a single large order, which was for the supply of undershirts and blouses.

There can be no rational justification behind the hike in exports, as T-shirts and blouses are hardly produced in the country, these days. Moreover, these garments can be obtained from Asia at much lower cost, said an expert.

The low comparative base has caused a sharp increase in the exports of textile products from Czech Republic to Iraq. Textile exports were almost nominal in the initial four months of last year; the increase was visible only during the subsequent months.

The country's exports to Iraq have started rising since 2003, but the market has not been fully exploited yet.
