The garment and apparel sector of Sri Lanka has broadly adopted cleaner production methods and currently has been marketing its products under the slogan "Garments without guilt", informed Dr. Palitha Kohona, recently while addressing the Second Committee of 65th Session of the General Assembly on Sustainable Development.
In spite of a number of challenges, Sri Lanka being a developing country has made every possible effort to work within the agreed parameters, and has been pursuing a vision. According to Dr. Kohona, sustainable development means to attain sustained economic growth, which is socially just and ecologically sound as well as based on harmony and stability.
Pertaining to this, the National Council for Sustainable Development (NCSD) has been formed in collaboration with all line Ministries, under the HarithaLanka (Green Lanka) Program. Giving major emphasis on energy, climate change and other environmental aspects has been the main task of the government ministries so that environmental sustainability is ensured in the country's efforts towards development.
